The Via de la Plata. In the Middle Ages, it was the main road to Santiago for Christians from Muslim-dominated southern Spain and North Africa.
You leave Seville with its beautiful Gothic cathedral and cycle into the dry landscape of Andalucia. This is the area of olives and oranges but also of the Black Spanish Torros. They alternate in the fields along the wide sandy paths that we follow to the north. Monasterio is the gateway to Extremadura, the land of the conquistadors. It is a bare flat landscape of red soil with here and there a lonely fig tree or olive grove that offers some shade.
Scenically, this route goes from hot Andalusia, through the green forests of the Sierra Morena to the desolation of Extremadura. Within Extremadura, however, there are pearls of towns such as Zafra, Roman Merida, and medieval Caceres. A variant leads along the equally beautiful Trujillo. Extremadura is known for its wealth of birdlife and eagles and vultures do indeed circle high overhead. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise, as in the Monfrague Natural Park.
